Protein Shake or a Proper Meal? How to Choose What Fits Your Day
It's a question we get a lot: if you can make a meal, why reach for a shake? The honest answer is that both have a place. Here's a practical way to decide, based on how your day actually looks.
Where a shake wins
- Time. A shake takes about a minute. A cooked meal takes planning, shopping and washing up.
- Carrying. A single-serve sachet and a shaker fit in a bag, a desk drawer or a hotel room.
- Consistency. The same serving, every time, with no weighing or guessing.
- Flexibility. Blend it into oats or pancakes, or shake it with iced coffee.
Where a meal wins
- Variety. A plate of tofu, rice, vegetables and herbs gives you flavours, textures and ingredients that a shake can't.
- Fibre and ingredients. Whole foods bring their own mix of fibre and other ingredients.
- Eating together. A meal is often a social moment, and that's worth something on its own.
- Satisfaction. Chewing is part of the pleasure of food.
Questions to ask yourself
- How much time do I have right now?
- Where will I be: at home, at work, travelling?
- Do I have a kitchen, a fridge, a shaker?
- What would I look forward to eating?
If the answers point to "busy, on the move, no kitchen", a shake is the easy choice. If you have time and a kitchen, a meal might win.
You don't have to choose
Plenty of people do both: a shake on a rushed morning, a proper meal in the evening. Others stir a serving into their breakfast oats and treat it as part of the meal. For ideas, see our post on 5 ways to use Heyday beyond a basic shake. So, shake or plate?
Think of a shake as one more tool in the kitchen. Use it when it makes your day easier, and cook when you'd rather. Neither one is the "right" answer.
